The Jumpstarting™ System is a
new, ground-breaking approach
to overcoming learning difficulties
and problems with basic learning skills.
A Unique Visual Process to Support Students with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia & Dyscalculia.
The Jumpstarting™ System:
Addressing the Underlying Issues of Dyslexia.
The processes used in the system are based on those developed by Olive Hickmott of Empowering Learning™
We know that students who are struggling with reading and spelling are not using their mental imagery skills effectively for these activities.
We also know, and most parents and teachers are well aware too, that stress plays a big part in learning difficulties.
The Jumpstarting™ System comprises processes that address these two issues.
What’s different about The Jumpstarting™ System
We give you the knowledge and tools for you to help yourself or your child to use mental imagery effectively for learning.
It’s not a scheme of work or set of materials – you can do the course at your own pace and there are no hidden costs.
By addressing the underlying issues many of the related problems, such as lack of self-confidence, begin to go away.
It is not just another phonics programme in disguise! The Jumpstarting™ System helps people to develop and control their mental imagery, the vital missing skill.
Mental Imagery: A Vital Skill for all Learning
- Mental imagery is essential for reading, effective spelling, reading comprehension, mental calculations, problem-solving and legible handwriting, etc.
- Although nearly all good spellers see words in their mind’s eye and fluent readers recognise words instantly, the importance of mental imagery is often overlooked.
- Some students require guidance on how to develop and control their internal mental imagery.
- It was previously believed that mental imagery was a skill that was inherent. We now know that it CAN be taught to those who are not using it automatically.
Dealing with Stress: An Effective Learning State
- Stress can be a major barrier to learning as, when stressed, it is more difficult to create new memories and recall information. This is due to the effect that the stress hormone cortisol has on parts of the brain.
- Children learn best when in an effective learning state, which is a relaxed body and an alert mind.
- Some children cannot develop or control their mental imagery skills until they are in a calm and focused state.
- Being in an effective learning state helps to reduce stress, increase concentration and focus and as a result improves memory and recall.
- Simple strategies for reducing stress quickly are useful for each individual, indeed the whole family and classroom too!
Developing Metacognition:
Exploring Inner Learning Experiences
The Jumpstarting™ System takes a forensic approach to help uncover what is really going on inside the mind of a struggling learner. It includes the following:
- Asking specific discovery questions to help the learner become aware of what is happening inside their mind and body when they are reading or spelling.
- Using the answers to these ‘discovery’ questions to identify the blocks to learning.
- Processes to help the student develop more effective learning strategies.
Standing on the Shoulders of Giants…
Our Influencers
Olive Hickmott is the founder of Empowering Learning™ and would have been assessed as Dyslexic by today’s standards. She is pleased, never to have been given the label as she has subsequently avoided feeling limited and humiliated. She wants to change, the focus of learning difficulties away from simply supporting the individual with their perceived deficit. Instead, she is offering teachers and parents the skills to enable our exceptionally talented, creative and imaginative students to learn in a way that works best for them.
She has become an internationally known expert in how people learn visually and how they can make the best use of their visual skills. Creative visual learning is a natural, essential skill that is currently under-acknowledged. Olive is an NLP Master Practitioner, Accredited Energetic NLP Practitioner, a Thought Pattern Management Master Practitioner and a Certified Coach.
Olive left her corporate life as an Engineering Director in 1990 and founded her own business. She is a Director of the Hickmott Partnership and The International Association for Health and Learning. Over the last decade she has trained a large network of Practitioners in the UK, Europe and worldwide. If you would like to learn more about Olive or to contact her directly:

Meet Sara - Course Co-Developer, Trainer, Learning Coach and International Speaker
I’m the mother of two boys, both of whom had some difficulties early on with learning to spell. Fortunately, I was able to use the processes I learnt from Olive Hickmott to help them.
Previously an engineering consultant and project manager for 10 years, I radically changed direction in careers in 2002 when I studied Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). I became a Master Practitioner and Trainer and have been running my own training and consulting business since 2003. Through this, I discovered how the power to change lives within each of us, providing we know how.
My passion is applying these tools and techniques in the area of education. Since meeting Olive Hickmott, I have been helping students, previously believed to have chronic and life-long learning difficulties, to overcome the debilitating symptoms and move forward in their lives. In fact, I was so taken with the process that I explored the impact of using it with adults with dyslexia in my Master’s research project, with great success.
As well as a partner in Jumpstarting Learning Skills, I am also the Managing Director of Quantum Leaps which provides one to one coaching, workshops and training courses.
